Program Chair's Message

Dear Colleagues,

I have two announcements. First, the SAIR 2006 deadline for the submission of proposals has been extended. The revised deadline is Wednesday, May 31. With the activities at the close of the spring semester and the preparations for AIR in Chicago, it became apparent that the SAIR membership needed additional time to organize and submit their proposals. But please, do not let May 31 pass without submitting your proposal(s). You will want to be a part of this exciting program.

Secondly, I want to tell you about a new program session category for the 2006 conference. In addition to proposals for paper, panel, roundtable, software demonstration, workshop, and special interest group sessions; this year SAIR is accepting proposals for “work share” sessions. These sessions are similar to paper sessions. They should describe a research study, an effective process or technique, or present a theoretical approach to a problem or issue but there is no expectation of a paper presented with the session. Therefore, if you have been working on something interesting and you believe that others in SAIR may find it interesting as well and hopefully useful but you do not think you will be able to complete a paper by the time of the conference, please consider submitting it as a “work share” proposal.

Again, don't delay. May 31 will be here sooner than you think. Please go to
http://sair.org/conferences/2006-arlington/prosp.asp and submit your proposal(s) today.

See you in Arlington.

What makes an effective institutional researcher?
Submitted by Bill Knight, Bowling Green State University

How do we really know?  I've been wondering about this and I am about to start a study to try to find out.  I'm hoping to interview a cross-section of institutional researchers (at different stages in their careers, with varying responsibilities, and across institutional and organizational types) this summer to try to learn more.  I could use your help.  If you know someone in IR who you feel is particularly effective (defined as having the ability to influence policy changes at their institutions/organizations) and would be a good candidate for the study, I'd like to ask you to contact me by June 2, 2006 at wknight@bgsu.edu with the name of one or more such persons and why you feel they are particularly effective.

Thank you.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

See you in Chicago!
