32nd Annual SAIR Conference

October 22-25, 2005
Charleston, South Carolina

From the President

Our hearts go out to all of those affected by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Many of our dear SAIR colleagues have been specifically affected as well. We continue to be touched by the e-mail messages and wireless phone conversations of SAIR members who have experienced the devastation first hand. Fortunately, we have made contact with most of our vulnerable members in the Gulf Coast Region.

Although frustrated by the enormity of the event and feeling at least somewhat helpless, the SAIR Board recently approved the following in an effort to contribute in a positive manner:

  • Three members of our Board will act as "point persons" for any of our affected members requesting assistance or for those volunteering to help in a specific and needed way. The "point persons" are Michelle Hall (mhall@selu.edu) for Louisiana, Julie Fulgham (julie@ir.msstate.edu) for Mississippi and Cathy Tanner (tanner530@bellsouth.net) for Alabama. You will find that there are ways to help. Julie just called me to indicate that folks from Mississippi State are driving to Biloxi daily to provide much needed life necessities including food for individuals.
  • A donation of $1,000 to the American Red Cross "in honor of SAIR members affected by hurricanes in the Gulf Coast Region."

I look forward to seeing you in Charleston.

Ross Griffith

Updates From Jim Eck, SAIR Program Chair

While we continue to extend our thoughts and prayers to our colleagues along the Gulf coast, we wanted to update you on several issues related to the annual conference.

Registration Issues: If you have registered in the past three weeks via the on-line registration, you should receive an invoice/confirmation via e-mail by the end of next week. The US Mail is still not operating in Hammond, LA, so if you sent your registration via US Mail, your invoice/confirmation will be delayed.  If you have not received an invoice/confirmation by September 23, please contact Michelle Hall (mhall@selu.edu).

Note for Presenters: If you are presenting a concurrent session, please plan to bring your own laptop unless your session requires an Internet connection. If you indicated that your session requires an Internet connection, SAIR will provide the laptop for your session while you'll need to bring an electronic copy of your presentation to load onto the computer.

Hotel Options: Several hotel options (in .pdf) still exist in the historical district of Charleston. While rooms at the Francis Marion, Embassy Suites and Hampton Inn are full, rooms are still available at the Holiday Inn Historic District, the King Charles Inn, the Indigo Inn, and the Meeting Street Inn.

Reception for Early Arrivals: The reception will be held on Saturday, October 22, from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. and dinner will follow at The Terrace, a local restaurant, at 7:15 p.m. Please contact Cathy Tanner (tanner530@bellsouth.net) if you are planning to attend.
